Top US Poetry Fellowship Finalist, Dibrugarh Boy Abhijit Sarmah

Alumnus Abhijit Sarmah studied in our Vidyalaya from the beginning of his school life and completed his Class 12 Science in the year 2013. As a talented poet from Assam, he has achieved a significant accomplishment by making it to the final list for the prestigious Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships in the United States. The Poetry Foundation awards five fellowships each year, and this $27,000 prize is considered one of the most substantial honours for young poets between the ages of 21 and 31 in the US.

Currently pursuing his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Georgia, Abhijit is from Chiring Chapori, Dibrugarh and feels blessed to be among the finalists for this esteemed fellowship. He is the sole Indian and the first person from Northeast India to be featured on the list.

The fellowship recipients, to be announced in late August, will receive a grant and have the opportunity to publish in the Poetry magazine. Additionally, each of the 12 finalists will be provided funding for their chosen professional development endeavours.

The teaching fraternity   and the school has expressed happiness for the success of the student and wishes him good luck for his future endeavours. Hope he keeps his passion for writing kindled with creativity and adds to the treasure of Indian writing in English.
